Introduction to Nutmeg

Our founder's story

Frustrated by the exclusivity and lack of transparency in the investment world, Nick Hungerford left his job as a stockbroker to start Nutmeg. It was 2012, and Nick and his co-founders believed the wealth management industry was failing many investors, and locking out many more. They made it their mission to democratise wealth management. Seeking to remove the barriers preventing people from achieving their financial goals, they created the UK’s first online discretionary investment management company: Nutmeg.

"We eventually chose the name 'Nutmeg' because it used to be the most valuable spice in the world. Many wars were fought over it. And of course now the spice is available to everyone, which is a great parallel."

Nick poured his energy into building a team of dedicated and talented individuals, combining their expertise in investing, technology, engineering, design and service. Together, they created Nutmeg, providing access to innovative investment products, while stripping out complex jargon, obscure benchmarks and opaque charges. In creating a straightforward investing experience, Nick empowered customers to make their own, informed, decisions about their assets — cutting out unnecessary and cumbersome steps. Meanwhile, the Nutmeg team was ready to offer expertise to anyone needing additional support. Thanks to Nick's vision and leadership, we've been a leading force in our industry, making investing possible for hundreds of thousands of people in the UK.

Sadly, Nick has not seen the full extent of his positive impact. Nick passed away in July 2023. We will always remember Nick for his passion for this business and, as Nutmeg continues as part of JPMorganChase, we will never forget his founding mission.
